I think I prefer the Mars from this movie:
This isn’t the first time John Carter has been considered for the big screen:
Have you read the books? They are GREAT fun, in the pulpy sense… hehe…
I’m embarrassed to admit I haven’t; the closest I have come is Michael Moorcock’s homage (*cough cough*) with his Warrior of Mars series, featuring the –entirely unrelated– character ‘John Kane’. (Oh, I have also come across the character in the second volume of Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.) I do like my pulp though, and so I’ll make a point to get round to Burrough’s novels. (On a not-too-dissimilar pulpy note, I recently finished re-reading Douglas Hill’s Galactic Warlord quartet, about the last surviving Legionary — a sort-of space-Ninja — who is on a quest to find out who nuked his planet. Awesome stuff.)
Do you think the movie looks good? I haven’t been sold by the trailer, but I have faith in Andrew Stanton who is in the Director’s chair.
I’m not sure about the movie…. But then again, I’m never sure about adaptions. I have fond memories of Burrough’s novels but you have to wade through some extremely racist sorts of comments (one walks down a dangerous road when an entire race is described as shifty etc). Worth reading for sure! The first ones are so old — 1910s!! So many authors were inspired by his work.
I’m not a “True” fan of Moorcock’s but I haven’t read that particular work of his. I did enjoy the Nomads of the Time Stream series (The Warlord of the Air, THe Steel Tsar, etc) — early steampunk/Jules Verne homage.
Mars, you say? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3V_dFw4mxeI /trollgrin
But seriously though, trailer to John Carter was… OK? I was never really exposed to the pulp genera in my earlier years, so I am missing some of its reference points. Nonetheless, trailer seemed alright, I suppose. Would go to see the flick, yeah.
