Peter Weller: Robocop
For a long time, Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan) was attached to do a remake of Robocop. This is a remake I have zero interest in, although with Aronofsky attached, I was mildly curious. Instead, he’s kicked it, to be replaced by Jose Padilha. If I had to gamble, I’d say it’s going to be a pile of shit.
This, however, was really good fun:
Aronofsky has a history of taking up geek projects only to ditch them. If you hunt around hard enough online you can find his Batman Year One script (written with Frank Miller) that was basically unfilmable as it took huge liberties with the rather lucrative Warner Bros property. Recently, he came within an inch of shooting the new Wolverine film with Christopher (Usual Suspects, Way of the Gun) Macquarrie, but then Black Swan won an Oscar and Aronofsky apparently tried to get final cut of Wolverine (a la Chris Nolan on the current Batman movies). Fox said no, and now he’s off to make a Noah’s Ark movie.
Which has very little to do with Robocop or Peter Weller. So here’s that famous video of Weller getting behind the people of Detroit’s campaign to have a Robocop statue installed in the city. Given the recent photos that have suggested how dilapidated it is, I think a statue of ol’ Chrome Dome might not be too conspicuous. Beats a statue of Eminiem anyway.
